How to map a feature that was sold / given?

I am mapping a feature in OpenHistoricalMap that changed hands from one owner to another.
How should I map this feature?

Should I map the feature twice with different start dates & end dates?
Or should I map the feature one and in the owner tag name both operators with a ; (even though data is lost like this)?

Thanks

Can you share more info? Is this a building or a POI or something else? There are probably a few ways to approach this, but having a little more detail might help clarify an approach.

There is a train system in Malta.

It was built and operated by a private company. The company went bankrupt and then was acquired by the government of Malta.

Don’t draw coincident railway=rail over them. It will be a mess. There’s no physical change.
Make type=route for them Tag:route=tracks - OpenStreetMap Wiki
I would prefer =tracks to emphasize it’s about the physical infrastructure. =railway may not be the most intuitive word, and it originates from the system of train services operating over the track.
