Hey, I’m new to OHM and looking for some guidance. I’ve been adding buildings and streets to Rochester, NY, but I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly. If someone with more experience could look it over and give me some pointers, that would be much appreciated.
Looks good. highway=tertiary is intended for through streets with some importance. Selden Street, for example, is a through street (from Gibbs to Cherry / Windsor), but seems to be a rather small street which could also be highway=residential. However, that decision is a matter of your personal discretion.
Welcome @BrownBear2000! Glad to have you mapping with us!
Howdy @BrownBear2000- I second @todrobbins’ note! Welcome to OHM!! ![]()
So impressed that you not only mapped, but that you also stopped by to ask some questions on the forum.
Here’s some of my observations of what you’re already doing quite well on OHM:
- Coming to the forum.

- Using
sourcetags liberally, both standalone and as namespace extensions for other attributes, such asend_date:sourceandname:source. - Richly describing your sources with
source:#:nameand the like. - Using lots of relations.
So, what you’re doing so far is pretty impressive and very helpful to others who might want to map in this area, too.
My few suggestions as you map even further:
- Full steam ahead with your mapping

- Come back to the forum!

- Tag everything with a source tag. I realize that there is much mapping today that lacks source tags, including my own, but we need to do a better job of encouraging this. Essentially, any
poi, way, orrelationshould have a source tag. I’m not as iD user, but it’s pretty easy to add tags in bulk using JOSM.
- Maybe (maybe) get comfortable putting one geometry on top of another. For example, I notice that you have 2 street ways slightly offset that I would guess are really the same object in the real world. And, I know mapping them this way makes it easier to see / distinguish when mapping. But, this might cause other problems if someone wanted to use the streets they intersect for some other purpose or to split that intersecting line. Which node should they use?
Again, those are minor items of feedback. You’re off to a great start & we’re so glad you’re here! ![]()
