Custom background

Does anyone know how to set a custom background? I have some survey maps I need to use but they exist as image files. I dont know how to set it as a reference layer for mapping though I have seen some other people do it before

You can do it with https://mapwarper.net, if you have further questions on how to use it feel free to ask,

After rectifying/warping the image go to the Export tab and copy this url into ID Editor or in JOSM. https://mapwarper.net/maps/tile/99635/{z}/{x}/{y}.png

Im not sure if Im doing something wrong but copying the url into the editor doesnt seem to work for me

Can you share the link? In the Rectify tab you have to click on Warp.

I don’t know if you clicked on Warp Image but anyways I did, and for me it works.

I tried again and this time it worked. I think I was just too impatient because I tried immediately after warping and finishing it

I wanna thank you a lot cause this will help me a ton

I have noticed in the ID Editor you have to sometimes or always refresh the website after changing the custom tile url.

it always takes like 5 minutes for mine

PicLayer could be another good option if you’re using JOSM now. It’s useful

Thanks for sharing that option. It might not be as good in some aspects, but it’s way easier to quickly do it there than doing it in mapwarper.

Hi first of all if you really want to use maps less than 50 years, you must set license= + attribution= , as they are not public domain yet. OHM is CC0 by default. However furthermore, HKSAR requires indemnity, and the T&C can be changed at anytime, which OSM LWG has explicitly commented as incompatible. I don’t know how it applies to Colonial Crown Copyright. https://osmfoundation.org/wiki/Licensing_Working_Group/Minutes/2024-05-13#Ticket#2024040710000103_–_Database_for_importing_license_question
Instead, I would simply work with out-of-copyright maps. There’s enough to do already.

Thanks @Charlie_Plett, this tip to refresh the editor after changing the custom layer has fixed the issue I was having with using National Library of Scotland maps.
